AS A HIGH-VOLUME mailer of statements and letters to policyholders, Mercury Insurance relies on postal data correction and standardization to help reduce postage and printing costs.
Mercury Insurance is the leading independent broker and agency writer of car insurance in California and has been one of the fastest growing car insurers in the nation. It is ranked as the third largest private passenger insurer in California, with assets over $3 billion. Mercury also writes car insurance in nine other states. Every day more than 1,000 drivers make the switch to Mercury, adding to its database of more than 1.4 million auto policyholders.
To keep its customer databases clean, Mercury uses a data cleansing solution from Melissa Data. Called "Address Object," this programmer's tool validates customer data in real time from applications and Web forms. An address submitted to Mercury is matched against the U.S. Postal Service database for validation, correction and standardization. The address clean-up activity level is about 22,000 records per month, according to Mercury's IT manager.
In addition, Mercury uses Melissa Data's geocoding data to determine the distance between a submitted address and the closest independent agent. Auto insurance shoppers may visit Mercury's Web site, input their ZIP Code, and receive a list of agents in their area. Address validation is also used to support requests for quotes on the Web site.
Celebrating its 20th year in business, Melissa Data, the Data Superstore, helps companies manage and optimize their contact data. Melissa Data provides solutions for address and phone number validation, postal coding, data enhancements and sales leads. Every day more than 70,000 people visit www.melissadata.com.
